How print size and pixels relate

An image file has a fixed number of pixels. Print size is what happens when you spread those pixels across a physical sheet of paper -- the same file can be a sharp 4x6 print or a soft, pixelated 16x20 poster, depending only on how large you stretch it.

That relationship is what this calculator solves: pixel dimensions divided by your target PPI gives the largest size that still holds that quality level. Go bigger than that and PPI drops; go smaller and it climbs.

FAQs

How is maximum print size calculated?

Divide the image's pixel width and height by your target PPI (pixels per inch). An image that's 3000 by 2000 pixels at 300 PPI works out to 10 by 6.7 inches -- print it larger than that at the same PPI and quality starts to drop.

What PPI should I actually aim for?

300 PPI for anything viewed up close: photos, business cards, brochures. 150 to 200 PPI is fine for posters viewed from a few feet away. Large banners and billboards, viewed from much further, can work at 100 PPI or even lower.

Why does the calculator show a different rating for different standard sizes?

The same image has a different effective PPI at every print size, since the same fixed pixel count is spread over more or less paper. A photo might be excellent quality at 5x7 inches and only fair at 11x14 inches.

Can I print larger than the 'maximum' size shown?

You can, but the PPI will drop below your target and the print will look softer. Whether that's acceptable depends on the viewing distance -- a poster viewed from across a room can get away with a much lower PPI than a photo held in your hand.
