ISO A-series vs US paper sizes

Most of the world uses the ISO 216 standard, better known as the A-series -- A4 for everyday documents, A3 for posters and spreads, A5 for booklets. Every size shares the same aspect ratio, so scaling a document up or down between sizes never distorts it.

The US, Canada, and a handful of other countries use a separate system based on inches: Letter for everyday documents, Legal for longer forms, Tabloid for larger spreads. These sizes don't share a consistent aspect ratio with each other, which is why scaling a US Letter document up to Tabloid leaves margins slightly different from the original.

FAQs

What's the difference between A4 and Letter size?

A4 (210 x 297mm, 8.27 x 11.69in) is the standard used across most of the world. US Letter (215.9 x 279.4mm, 8.5 x 11in) is the standard in the US, Canada, and a few other countries. A4 is slightly narrower and taller than Letter.

Why does the ISO A series double or halve between sizes?

Each size in the series is exactly half the area of the one before it, cut along the longer dimension: A3 folded in half makes two A4 sheets, A4 folded in half makes two A5 sheets, and so on. That's what keeps the aspect ratio identical across every size in the series.

How many pixels is A4 at 300 DPI?

2480 x 3508 pixels. That's the standard target for a print-ready A4 document or image.

What size is a Tabloid or Ledger sheet?

Both refer to the same 11 x 17 inch (279.4 x 431.8mm) sheet -- Tabloid when used in portrait orientation, Ledger when used in landscape. It's also called ANSI B.
